Established in terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998, the MERSETA is one of 23 Sector Education and Training Authorities in South Africa.  In accordance with the Act, the SETAS have been set up to encourage skills development through the establishment of a system of levies and grants, the registration of new learners and the quality assurance of training providers and assessors.
 

The MERSETA facilitates skills development in the following sub-sectors

  • Metal and engineering
  • Auto manufacturing
  • Motor retail and component manufacturing
  • Tyre manufacturing and
  • Plastics industries

The MEIBC recognises the importance of developing literacy and technical skills in the workforce, in order to ensure that the South African metal and engineering industries remain globally competitive.
